VAEA 2013 ~ Electives! In Elementary

I just attended the VAEA 2013 Professional Development Conference in Falls Church. It was only about 45 minutes away but I was able to get my school to pay for the registration and a hotel for two nights. I roomed with 2 other art teachers from Fauquier and we always have a great time together as well as learn a lot from each other! Seven teachers from my county attended.

It is always great to catch up with the professors and fellow students from the MAT program at George Mason too! It is like a built in support systems to see them at my session as well as attend theirs.

I know embarrassingly, I have not posted here for a year, but frankly every time I tried to sign in I could not figure out how to edit my blog since everything on Google changed! This time I was determined to make it in!

I wanted to share my resources with the wonderful educators who attended my session!

First, there were a few blog posts from when I taught the electives class.

Then here is my Power Point Presentation - it was a bit large to email.

Please let me know if you have any questions about the information.

Teacher Appreciation Week

You gotta love Teacher Appreciation Week! Our PTO is awesome and arranges breakfast everyday, a luncheon on Thursday (including volunteers to cover our classes) and goodie bags! Each day of the week the students were to bring us flowers, thank you notes, a small school supply and summer fun items. So I had to share a few of the great notes I got!

From a 3rd grader - it has words in each petal that reads:

Dear Mrs. Burke Thank you for helping us with art - you are so creative you teach us to be creative like you, but that won't happen because you are the most creative that's why they chose you to be the art teacher at Greenville. Thank you so much.

This one from a 4th grader did me in - Got me chocked up!

From a 1st grader! I love how she has the kids sitting on their stools around the table.

From one of my quiet 3rd grade girls ~ click on this to enlarge - it is hilareous!- my favorite is 2. You still have all you hair, even with us lunatics in your class.

Spring Art Festival

I have been so far behind on posting and not sure where to start! So thanks to Phyl at There's a Dragon in My Artroom for starting the topic of District-wide art shows.

Here are posts about last year's Art Festival in my county.

Each year in Fauquier County we have a county wide show where art teachers from our 11 Elementary Schools, 5 Middle Schools and 3 High Schools display work they have chosen. It is billed as an Arts Festival so it also includes music and choral performances. I think these are on a volunteer basis of the music teachers. Each art teacher is tasked at bringing cookies, crackers and Ginger Ale for punch.

For the past three years that I have been in the county the show has been at Kettle Run HS because it was just built and the county wanted to show it off. It is also where our 'lead art teacher' works. We also have a traveling art show where each teacher brings 6 pieces of artwork and it gets divided into 3 different shows. These shows travel to different schools throughout the year to showcase work from around the county. All 3 shows come back and are displayed at the Art Festival as well.

Since I started I have been of the opinion that each school should showcase their program and keep their school's work all together in one place. Currently each teacher mounts their work and then it gets hung anywhere within the main hall or gym of the HS. The HS Art students help hang the work - so a lot of times even the art teacher that brought the work does not know where the work is hung. This causes problems when the student and their whole family come to see the work and it cannot be found. In the past it was done this way so that parents would look at all the work and not just their child's. I don't think you can force people to look - and they are there to see and support their child's work and school.

Here are pictures of my display all in one place on 1/2 inch foam core boards.

One of our veteran HS teachers posed some tough questions after our show this year. Should we still do it? Has it gotten too big? Where should it be held? things like that...
I will be interested in the discussion it leads to at our final meeting of the year.

Seattle Bound

It is official! I have some funding from my school and I just officially registered to attend the National Art Education Convention in Seattle, Washington.

I am really excited about attending:
  1. This will be the first National Convention I have been able to attend since Grad school. I went to Boston in 05, Chicago in 06 and New York in 07. George Mason helped pay for those travels.
  2. I live in Virginia and my Mom, step dad and my sister and her family live in Kirkland, WA.
  3. My mom turns 60 on March 12th. I surprised her in Washington on her 50th 10 years ago so it is kind of a tradition!
  4. I miss my family (my nieces especially) and look forward to seeing them!
  5. I love getting new ideas and new perspectives on Art Ed.
  6. Signed up for a Chihuly tour!
  7. Will I get to meet any of my blogger buddies??
So I will have two nights in the convention hotel and the rest either at my mom or my sister's. I have already lined up a good sub and will work with him on some lessons - he already teaches a graphic design elective for me so I know he will be great and I won't have to worry about my students missing out on any learning!

So are any of you out there going?? Let me know!

Top Art Teacher Blogs, South Region
I made the list, too!

I see a lot of my blogger friends posting that they got an email about making the list of Top Art Teacher Blogs, South Region from the Teacher Salary Website. Well I didn't get the email - maybe it is lost in junk mail filter land... but I am on the list!

It is definately a good list - and looking forward to following the new ones I didn't know about!

Art Teacher Workshop Revitalizes!

I must say I have had a very blah week and have been just trudging through ~ you know you have them once in a while! Today I went to a Teacher workshop on simple book making and it was great. Being in a room with other teachers learning and creating!
Here is what I made in just 2 hours:
Here is the star book ~ Which I already knew how to make and posted a how to on it here.

Then we used a few techniques of using one page and cutting in a select spot then folding to make a book. This one is made out of a wallpaper sample:

This one is also a single piece of paper - with a cover and ribbon ties:

Next was a hole punched book with a simple stitched binding with buttons and beads added.
TGIF ~ I have a fairly easy schedule on Fridays (shh don't tell anyone.) And I get to teach my Art Photo Elective! Will share more about the book making later ~ wanted to show off my productivity before going to bed!

And this is why I teach...

I got this email from a parent today:

Hi Mrs. Burke,

I just wanted to share with you that {my daughter} entered 54 items in the county fair this year. She walked away with lots of blue ribbons and a special award for receiving the most exhibitor points this year. On many of her pictures the judges wrote "great use of space and color". {my daughter} said, "well that's because Mrs. Burke taught us how to fill up the whole paper and use lots of color."
So I just wanted to thank you for inspiring and teaching {my daughter} all that you have. It was quite a thrill for her to enter so much art at the fair this year.

How awesome is that? The student was in 2nd grade I have included a sampling of her work. I am always so honored when parents share what their children say about my art class. They take the time to email and I am very grateful. This comes at a perfect time as summer is winding down and it is going to get VERY busy in the next two weeks as I start back a week from today. I am going to deliver some stuff to my room today and get some fliers ready for meet your teacher night. You will all probably hear the groans worldwide when I tell my son he has to go to school with me today!!

Getting Close...

to school starting again. It is hard to believe this will be my third year at Greenville! I am starting to get the hang of this being off in the summers again. Last year I felt a bit unproductive. This year I made lists and I had this blog to keep me honest :-) At least it helped me to feel like I was getting somewhere and doing something. This week I will be staying close to home - been taking care of drs appointments, organizing files and just wrapping my head around another great year of teaching ART to K - 5th graders.
Experimenting with dinner - need to add a few more to my list, my boys are getting tired of steak, spaghetti and breaded chicken breasts. Here is the Rachael Ray recipe I made for dinner. No leftovers and my son said "This is the fanciest dinner you've ever made, mom." I'd call that a success.
Back to curriculum ~ I made a list of what I taught by grade and attached the standards to see what I might need to add. I also listed what I taught last year but did not get to this year (mostly because of so many SNOW DAYS!) I also have my inventory lists and what I need to order. I have kind of shot myself in the foot by being good at fundraising! My principal brags that I am 'self-supporting' so with all the budget cuts I will not be getting any money from the school this year. I have to use all the money I raised. I do very well with a magnet fundraiser where items arrive in time for the holidays - it also helps that I teach in a rather affluent part of the county. I also make a pretty good sum from Artsonia. Here was my procrastination drawing on my folder.
I am working on an inventory spreadsheet to make this easier in the future. To quickly see how much I used for the year and what I need to order for the next.
All my files are organized in boxes ready to go back to school and slip into the file cabinet. I still have a couple 'not sure' piles - slowly working through them. I am proud of myself for not stressing over having the folder tabs alternate and having everything color coded - that is a big step for me... letting things like that go. It is organized and it serves the purpose - I am not getting graded on it... am I? So here are the three sections:
The files I keep in my desk divided into the following categories: My Art Program, County Art Program, School/County Admin, Previous Planning Books
Then the student handouts which I recently laminated and hole punched. (see this  blog entry) This is anything the students will use as a reference or complete.

Then I have all the lesson plan ideas I have been collecting. I organized those by subject:
Hopefully this will help someone either become more organized or give them permission to use *gasp* different colored folders and *gasp* handwritten titles. I know I need help! Maybe I should just set it all on fire (CED theme of the month!)!
Well this short little update turned into a novel as usual. Enjoy the last week of summer!

Art Teachers on the River

All of the county buildings/schools are closed on Fridays in the summertime. So our camps only run from Mon-Thurs. On Friday we planned a nice little get together at one of the teacher's homes. She recently graduated from VCU and lives with her dad in Remington. http://www.remingtonva.org/ What an amazing place they have. It is right on the Rappahannock River and her dad is a real artist himself.

There entire property is filled with little gems and surprises all over the place. Windchimes, wire, stones, wood all purposely placed about the yard. I loved the staging table – where all the new finds seemed to be placed getting ready for where they will be wedged into the landscape.

Our crew consisted of 2 recently retired high school teachers, two current HS teachers – one our lead art teacher for the county and then two elementary teachers. We met rather early as it was already pretty hot and humid at 9AM!

Most set up and got to work painting. I brought all manner of drawing materials and started out sketching a nice overturned tree stump. I also took lots of pictures. I got started on a doodle technique from a book I just got called Zentangles. Check out the official site for it: http://www.zentangle.com/

So here are my creative endeavors: sketches, ATCs, zentangles, photos oh my!
